Deena Justice is sure that she's going to land a part in Balance Dance Company's big tour. She sure she'll get the part and she's sure her life will change around as well. When she gets that part she'll earn the money she needs, she can move out of the projects, and she can stop begging her son's father for child support. But it doesn't happen. Not only does she fail at her audition, but she aggravates an old injury that will ensure her retirement. Her big dream is dashed, she's broke and her ten year old son Toussaint tells her in so many words that he doesn't love her anymore, even though she's sacrificed everything to take care of him. Feeling worthless, Deena believes her only recourse is to get away, and she abandons Toussaint at a pizza shop. Not knowing where to go or what to do, she finds herself in a subway station. When a strange man accosts her she tries to leave the station but finds all the doors that lead to the outside locked tight. She finds out that the strange man who accosted her is called High John. High John tells Deena that the only way she can free herself from the subway station is to jump across the train tracks from one platform to the other. To Deena this is an impossible task, but the other choice is to remain trapped in the subway station forever.
