Linda arrives at the plantation where she will be a house slave. Dr. Flint thinks himself a liberal and tries to gain her affection. Later, Linda is engaged to Boston, and pregnant. Boston has money to buy Linda. Linda goes to ask for her release, but Dr. Flint rejects it. Linda's new baby gives hope. But Dr. Flint wants Linda to travel with him to Louisiana, suggesting she'll have an easy life. Linda refuses but he says she has no choice.Boston clandestinely comes to meet Linda. He has joined the Union Army. Linda's hopes of freedom are dashed. Mrs. Flint confronts her husband about Linda. The argument turns violent. At midnight Mrs. Flint goes into Linda's bedroom and threatens to kill her. Linda, recognizing her relative power in the situation, takes a stand.Fed up, Linda escapes. She goes to grandmother's cabin for help. Grandmother is afraid Linda will get caught, so she hides her in a secret space in the attic.When Dr. Flint angrily comes to 'reclaim his property.' Grandmother says Linda has escaped to the North. He says if he finds out she is lying he will kill the child. In the attic, Linda listens with horror.Fade up from black as Linda peeks through a tiny hole in the attic to see Grandmother playing with Linda's, now seven-year old, son. We hear Linda's voice saying she has no regrets for her choice - she chose her own version of freedom.
