SUMMARY:Meet Mary Pleasant (Mother Of Civil Rights In CA)
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by venerable actress Ruby Dee\, this unique document
ary interweaves an acclaimed historical performance\, based on Mary Plea
sant's own words\, with scholars' commentary\, period music and montage\
, and historical re-enactments to reveal an unsung\, 19th-century Africa
n-American heroine. Mary Ellen Pleasant (often misnamed Mammy Ple
asant) was born a slave in Georgia and raised in Nantucket\, MA. In Bost
on she married a rich merchant and became a slave rescuer on the Undergr
ound Railroad in Nantucket\, New Bedford\, Ohio\, and finally New Orlean
s before going West. She lived most of her life in San Francisco and onc
e studied social leveraging tactics with the great voodoo queen\, Marie
LaVeaux. For her great contributions to the abolition of slavery\, the
protection of Civil Rights\, and acquisition of jobs for African-Americ
ans there\, that San Francisco has honored her with a memorial at the co
rner of Bush and Octavia Streets with the title 'Mother of Civil Rights
in California' inscribed upon it. Mrs. Pleasant gained national signifi
cance when she aided the abolitionist John Brown before the Civil War an
d via a court battle that she waged in the California State Supreme Cour
t that changed modern-day civil rights law. As entrepreneur and philanth
ropist she amassed a joint fortune once assessed at $30\,000\,000! Havin
g had powerful enemies who distorted her name in the press and a few mis
deeds of her own\, Pleasant's colorful story has been all but lost. This
film restores it fully (57 min)

SUMMARY:Walking Tall: The Life And Wife Of Walt Walker
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tall: The Life and Wife of Walt Walker\, artist\, bus
inessman and entrepreneur. The late Walt Walker\, who passed away five y
ears ago at 84\, created the most extensive collection of paintings\, mu
rals\, drawings\, sketches and graphic arts and holds the distinction of
being one of the first African Americans to to open an art gallery feat
uring black images in Los Angeles. This documentary will inspire artists
to first learn the art of business\, then the business of art to steer
clear of a life of the starving artist. Walking Tall exhibits the most c
omprehensive body of Walt's popular work as well as little shown works i
ncluding his sketches and murals.By Walt's own admission\, were it not f
or the efforts of his business-minded wife\, Jane Walker\, and their 62
year marriage\, we may never have known his name. In addition to his wif
e\, Jane\, interviews include Charles Bibbs\, renowned artist and owner
 of the 626 Gallery\, Cecil and Miriam Fergerson\, art curators\, Ayuko B
abu\, Pan African Film Festival co-founder and Walker's eldest son Russe
ll. He pioneered the black arts movement by opening the LeJan Gallery in
the early 1960's and later was known for exhibiting his own art at Ray'
s Redwood Kitchen on Western Avenue in Los Angeles for 10 years. After
exhibiting at community art shows and outdoor festivals\, Jane insisted
that they invest in prints so that 'the mother in Watts could buy some a
rt for her apartment.' Now\, many people own a Walt Walker original.

SUMMARY:Streets Of Color
DESCRIPTION:'Streets of Color\,' Calypso's version of the old Roman Bacch
analia\, reflects the resources of multi-ethnic Trinidad and Tobago. It
symbolizes the culture of a people who derive their energy and lifestyle
from a pre-Lenten carnival called 'mas' (masquerade). The documentary f
eatures Peter Minshall\, a designer who gained fame as an artistic direc
tor for the opening/closing ceremonies at three Olympic Games - by expou
nding on his controversial works in the mas. The dichotomy of today's fe
stival pits his theme\, 'Tapestry' - about the interconnection of man\,
his environment\, his gods - against presentations by new-wave designers
of minimalist (bikini-styled) costumes that appeal to neo-pagan celebra
 nts. Minshall\, a traditionalist\, stands his ground\, invokes satire\,
shoves a mirror in their faces\, and says\, 'That's you.'

SUMMARY:Adjust Your Color: The Truth Of Petey Greene
DESCRIPTION:The heroic story of America's first shock-jock\, Petey Greene
was a black man in a white man's world during a time of civil unrest in
our nation's capital. Petey overcame poverty\, drug addiction and a pri
son sentence for armed robbery by 'telling it like it is' on his raw unc
ensored radio and television shows in the late 60's and 70's. His explos
ive language and brash style shocked the world as Petey battled both the
system and his own demons on the journey to becoming a leading activist
during some of our country's most tumultuous years. The film features s
cenes from 'Petey Greene's Washington' that have not been seen in 25 yea
rs\, including one show with an up and coming deejay named Howard Stern.
Don Cheadle\, who played Petey in the feature Talk To Me\, narrates thi
 s documentary.

SUMMARY:Turning A Corner
DESCRIPTION:'Turning a Corner' was created in a media activism workshop t
hat director Salome Chasnoff facilitated with 15 women who were street p
rostitutes in Chicago. The women were trained to use video cameras\, con
duct interviews\, analyze the issues surrounding prostitution\, and tell
their stories. Shot on the street corners across Chicago where they on
ce traded sex\, the film features the women's survival and triumph over
 sexual abuse\, homelessness\, violence and discrimination.'Turning a Cor
ner' gives rare insights into Chicago's sex industry\, and documents the
women's efforts to raise awareness of the injustices experienced by tho
se who struggle to survive in this underground world. They include Lucre
tia Clay\, whose mother sold her to a pimp when she was 12 years old. Lu
cretia takes us to the seedy motel where she spent most of the 26 years
during which she was trapped in the world of street prostitution. 'A lot
of the girls that I worked with are not here to come back and tell thei
r story\,' she reflects. Also profiled is Brenda Myers\, who takes the v
iewer on a tour of Chicago where the sex industry thrives. 'When women w
ere in prostitution and get out of it\, they never tell anybody because
of the way people judge them\, because of the 'scarlet letter.' I think
  somebody should\, and that's what I do\,' Brenda explains.
'The women's compelling analyses of prostitu
tion and the effects of its criminalization will surprise even the most
 knowledgeable viewer\,' says Chasnoff.

SUMMARY:Machetero
DESCRIPTION:Post 9/11 definitions\, ideas and notions of terrorism are ch
allenged in this highly controversial and experimental film. Machetero i
s an allegorical narrative that follows French journalist Jean Dumont pl
ayed by Isaach de Bankole (The Keeper\, Ghost Dog\, Coffee and Cigarette
s\, Manderlay) to a New York prison where he interviews Pedro Taino a so
called 'Puerto Rican Terrorist' played by Not4Prophet (lead singer of t
he Puerto Punk band RICANSTRUCTION). Pedro is a self-described Machetero
fighting to free Puerto Rico from the yoke of United States colonialism
. He is obsessed with freedom\, freedom for his country\, his people and
for himself. Jean questions Pedro about his decisions to use violence a
s a means to achieve that freedom. As Jean and Pedro speak\, another stor
y unfolds. A ghetto youth played by Kelvin Fernandez (in his first starr
ing role) grows up in the ghetto streets and crosses paths with Pedro. P
edro sees potential in the ghetto youth and reawakens a revolutionary sp
irit instilled in from childhood by a mentor in Puerto Rico played by fo
rmer Puerto Rican Prisoner of War Dylcia Pagan (who did 20 years in US p
risons). Pedro tries to provide the means for the ghetto youth to grow i
nto the next generation of Machetero. The film is structured around song
s from the album\, ?Liberation Day? written and performed by RICANSTRUCT
ION and interwoven into the film as a modern day Greek chorus. RICANSTRU
CTION also provides an original improvised score that moves from hardcor
e be-bop punk to layered haunting and abstract Afro-Rican rhythms.

DESCRIPTION:Tru (Najarra Townsend)\, high school student from San Francis
co\, is uprooted from by her lesbian moms (Alexandra Paul and Cynda Will
iams) and moved to a conservative suburb. Her non-traditional family mak
es her an outsider until high school quarterback Lodell takes an interes

sexuality from Lo?s friends\, she establishes the school?s first Gay-Str

raised by his gay uncle (Bruce Vilanch). Tru begins a romance and fights
for social justice as her unconventional family faces familiar struggle
s.Tru Loved presents an innovative reinvention of the family film genre
as well as an inventive approach to filmmaking that explicitly connects
with social justice organizations and the communities they represent. Th
e film?s originality derives from being among the very first gay-themed
family films. Tru Loved updates traditional themes while it represents t
oday?s diverse families and complex social issues related to gay parenti
ng\, gay marriage\, and gay-straight alliances in the context of a multi
ethnic cast. While it is virtually Disney-esque in its representation o
f the family film genre\, the themes are distinctive as they relate to c
ontemporary families and their issues.Driven by a script that twists a f
amiliar genre\, Tru Loved is a fresh\, groundbreaking film that offers u

SUMMARY:Don't Hate: Strippers Fight The Government
DESCRIPTION:Black Male Exotic Dancers (who perform non-obscene dance rout
ines for women) fought the government in federal court for their Constit
utional Rights (with a Black lawyer) in order to maintain their liveliho
ods and support their families and won! The female patrons are from all
walks of life and prefer to watch male entertainment rather than go toc
lubs or happy hours where they have to deal with the unwelcomed advances
  and harassment from male patrons.Prince George's County\, Maryland\, a
local government\, passed an ordinance that among other things\, prohibi
ted tippingof dancers during their performance\, restricted a patron's d
istance from a performer to 6 ft and required a male entertainer to wear
a shirt and short anytime he is not on stage. The ordinance also made i
t a crime to touch a dancer while he is in a g-string. This is a story t
hat the government does not want you to know about. It is not often that
Black Men fight the government in federal court with a Black lawyer and
win! This documentary will address a lot of the myths surrounding male
adult entertainers. It will also show you that they are regular people\
, like you and I with families\, goals\, and dreams. They are more than
just eye candy! Despite the title\, there is no nudity in the film. "th

es that will haunt you in your dreams. And man\, these dudes can dance!
I kept wanting to throw dollar bills at the screen." Philip Huang\, cu
lturevulture.net (2007) "Too often in film\, Black Men are portrayed as
innately savage\, animalistic\, \ndestructive and criminal. They are de
picted as an anti-social predators \nterrifying the community in which
they dwell. This film depicts Black People (as they truly are) as people
relating to other people -- not as mere plot devices and not as charact
ers defined solely by how they relate to the white world. When the gover
nment tried to take away the dancers constitutional rights they did not
riot in the streets or picket in front of a government building. Instea
d\, they got a lawyer and went to court to fight the government...It is
not often that Black Men fight the government in federal court with a

SUMMARY:Outspoken - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:What is injustice\, and who defines that? What makes us spea
k out? That is the exploration of 'Outspoken Los Angeles\, a feature le
ngth documentary that focuses on Los Angeles residents who commit themse
lves to ending the Iraq war through their unique styles of protest.'Outs
poken - Los Angeles' will reach into the motives of how and why. Why do
these characters speak out? What got them to where they are? These are r
eal stories of real people telling their truth. Outspoken puts a profoun
d human face on the Los Angeles anti-war movement\, and examines the int
imate side of protest. The film is more a character study than an anti-w
ar documentary\, the film offers viewers a portrait of L.A. residents wh
o feel desperately compelled to engage the democratic process for change
in a sometimes aggressive and combative way\, driven by their personal
experiences and struggles. The goal is to empower people\, to teach peopl
e that we are not powerless. There is a way to help evoke change\, as it
did during the civil rights movement and during Vietnam. Furthermore\,
to show the appeal of activism and that those leading the movement are j
ust like anyone else - human. Finally\, to show that it's important to o
ne's self balance to stand up for what you believe in.

SUMMARY:Prince Among Slaves
DESCRIPTION:In 1788 the slave ship Africa\, set sail from West Africa and
headed for America with its berth laden with a profitable but highly pe
rishable cargo--hundreds of men\, women and children bound in chains. S
ix months later the survivors were sold in Natchez\, Mississippi. One o
 f them\, a 26-year-old man named Abdul-Rahman made a remarkable claim to
the farmer who purchased him at the auction that he was an African prin
ce and that his father would pay gold for his ransom. The offer was refu
sed and Abdul-Rahman did not return to Africa for another 40 years. Dur
ing his enslavement he toiled on the Foster plantation\, married\, and f
athered nine children. His story also eventually made him the most famo
us African in America\, attracting the support of powerful men such as P
resident John Quincy Adams. After forty years of slavery\, Abdul-Rahman
finally reclaimed his freedom\, but he defied the order to return immed
iately to Africa\, and instead traveled throughout the northern states\,
speaking to huge audiences in a partially successful attempt to raise e
nough money to buy his children's freedom. Finally at the age of 67\, an
d after raising funds to free two of his children\, Abdul-Rahman returne
d to Africa\, only to fall ill and die just as word of his arrival reach
ed his former home of Futa Jalloo in present-day Guinea. Abdul-Rahman su
rvived the harsh ordeals of slavery through his love of family and his d
 eep faith as a Muslim.

SUMMARY:Rain In A Dry Land
DESCRIPTION:In 2004\, thirteen thousand Somali Bantu refugees realized th
eir dream of coming to America. They are now living in fifty cities acr
oss the country\, becoming the largest African group from a single minor
ity to settle in the United States at one time. Rain in a Dry Land ch
ronicles two years in the lives of two extended Somali Bantu families as
they leave behind a two-hundred year legacy of oppression in Africa to
face new challenges in a strange new land. The film begins in January\
, 2004\, at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya\, where our featured famili
es are stunned by what they learn about America in their 'Cultural Orien
 tation' class: refrigerators\, stoves\, bathtubs\, elevators\, stairs\,
buildings taller than one storey\, schools\, and all the things we take
for granted in modern life. As their awe and excitement grow\, the audie
nce fears for them. How will these illiterate Muslim farmers who speak
no English manage to survive in America? These opening scenes in Kakuma i
ntroduce our featured families\, both dynamic\, charismatic\, and very d
ifferent in nature. Arbai is quick\, strong\, affectionate\, a single mo
ther of four with a great sense of humor and an easy contagious laugh\,
despite her devastating past. Madina is fierce\, vulnerable\, wounded\,
strong\; her husband Aden is volatile\, moody\, soulful\, determined to
provide for his huge family but uncertain and a bit naive about the life
that lies ahead. Their witty\, resourceful teenage sons\, Ali (17) and
Warsame (15)\, figure prominently in the film\, as do Arbai's beautiful
teenage daughters\, Sahara (13) and Khadija (16). The documentary fo
llows these two families to America and through their first two years in
their new homes. Aden and Madina\, sponsored by Jewish Family Service\
, settle in the grim mill-town of Springfield\, Massachusetts\; while Ar
 bai's family settles in Atlanta.Despite racism\, poverty\, failures of t
he school system\, and severe culture shock\, both families do find ways
to survive in America\, and to create a safe haven for their war-torn f
amilies. The film ends with two vivid celebrations: the naming ceremony
of Aden and Madina's first American-born child\; and the traditional wed
ding of Arbai's oldest daughter\, a colorful reunion of hundreds of Soma
li Bantu families converging on Atlanta from all over America.

SUMMARY:Belly Of The Basin
DESCRIPTION:Belly of the Basin is a one hour documentary which presents t
he central question - what happens to marginalized people displaced by a
natural disaster and flood? Bombarded with sensationalized media covera
ge of Hurricane Katrina for about one month after the hurricane ravaged
the Gulf Coast\, audiences around the world watched the media's portraya
l of demoralizing images of African Americans 'looting' for survival jux
taposed with sympathetic images of White Americans luckily 'finding' sup
plies for survival. As a result\, the media criminalized African America
n survival perpetuating racist ideology about the African American commu
nity as opposed to focusing on the overwhelming psychological and physic
al displacement and dislocation that the hurricane created for the commu
nity. Hurricane Katrina exposed to the world the long existing racial an
d class divide present in New Orleans specifically and across America in
general. Since the hurricane\, much has been said about the destruction
of buildings\, businesses\, and houses\, but for the survivors\, the em
otional and psychological loss of 'home' has been the most difficult to
handle. Through individual stories of survivors and volunteers of grassr
oots organizations Belly of the Basin poses questions about the value of
human life in relationship to race\, class\, and politics.

SUMMARY:Sympathetic Details
DESCRIPTION:'Sympathetic Details' follows Jonathan\, an assassin\, throu
gh two assignments during which he makes a moral decision to leave his l
ife of professional murder. It is a psychological thriller\, defined by
character and dialogue instead of the action typical of the genre. Jon
athan's boss\, Phillips\, has essentially adopted Jonathan after the dea
th of Jonathan's father and has raised him in the only world that he kno
ws\, contract killing. During Jonathan's first assignment\, he finds th
at he has killed a little boy's father\, which makes him question his oc
cupation. Jonathan encounters Lena\, a former love interest who represe
nts hope for a life outside of the one in which he is immersed. Jonathan
turns away from his organization and life of assassination after the ac
cidental death of a child during an assignment. The secretive nature of
murder demands his eternal silence and his compassionate vulnerability
to moral righteousness makes his retirement bring the security of his se
crets into question. The head of the organization\, Carson\, orders Jon
athan's death and warns Phillips who\, through torn loyalties\, chooses
to protect Jonathan. Carson eventually realizes that Phillips may inter
fere and tries to call off the hit in order to protect him. In the conf
usion of colliding parties\, Phillips and his team are killed and Jonath
an is pursued into the forest by Carson's crew. The film ends as a stat
ement about the indifference of nature and the impossibility of anyone t
o protect the ones they love from the randomness of death.

2005--is a powerful documentary that examines death row prisoner\, Crips
gang co-founder\, children's book author and Nobel Peace Prize nominee
Stanley Tookie Williams. The international campaign for clemency to save
him from death by lethal injection ended on December 13\, 2005\, at 12:
35 a.m.\, when he was pronounced dead after clemency was denied by Calif
ornia Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. TRIBUTE includes scenes from a sta
ged reenactment of that execution. The reenactment--as well as TRIBUTE--
were produced and directed by writer Barbara Becnel and producer Shirley
Neal\, longtime friends of Stanley Tookie Williams. It was based on the
ir real-life experience at San Quentin's death chamber witnessing his bo
tched execution--it took him 35 minutes to die. The two women filmed the
staged reenactment\, enabling TRIBUTE to offer a very intimate view of
capital punishment. 'We created and staged a play that replicated the ex
ecution because we wanted people to see exactly what the State of Califo
rnia does in the middle of the night in the name of the people of the St
ate of California\,' explains Barbara Becnel. TRIBUTE includes provocati
ve eulogies by Snoop Dogg\, Tony Robbins and Louis Farrakhan--speaking a
t the memorial service of Stanley Tookie Williams--and never-before-seen
footage of his ashes scattered by Becnel and Neal in Soweto\, South Afr
ica. This was his last wish.
